Nottinghamshire Alumni Group

On 16 February 2010, 27 members of the Nottinghamshire Alumni Group visited the Attenborough Nature Centre near Nottingham.

We were very fortunate with the weather - we had a brilliantly sunny, if cold morning and were given a guided (though muddy!) tour of parts of the Reserve, including a high bird watching hide where it might have been possible to see one of the 7 or so bitterns known to inhabit the Reserve. We didn't in fact spot them (unsurprisingly!) but did hear about the work which the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has done and is planning to do to develop the site. It consisted originally of gravel quarries which are no longer in use. These do provide the water which is such a magnet for birds of all kinds but the pools are steep-sided so the NWLT are in the process of creating reed beds which are essential for many species.

After a buffet lunch we were addressed by Mr John Everitt, Chief Executive of the Notts, Wildlife Trust. This was a most authoritative and comprehensive survey of the NWT's work both at Attenborough and at other sites in Notts. Our meeting closed at about 3pm and, judging by comments from members, was very successful.
