The Cambridge Society of Western Australia
The Cambridge Society of Western Australia competed in the inaugural Western Australian Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race on the Swan River, Perth on Sunday 22nd November 2009, in what was the first ever Boat Race to take place in the southern hemisphere, and also the first East of the meridian line.
The weather was ideal, the venue was perfect and there were more than 300 spectators. Unfortunately Oxford won ‘by a canvas’, having a five year advantage in average age and a 9 kilogram advantage in average weight but other than that, the function was a huge success and enormous fun!
The event attracted letters of support from the Governor of Western Australia, the Premier of Western Australia and the Foreign Minister of the Australian Government in whose electorate the race took place. The winners were presented with the Trophy, to be known as the Swan Blues Cup, by Simon Withers who is Mayor of Cambridge (a major subdivision of Perth) and a law graduate of Queens' College, Cambridge, who gave a very amusing if some-what biased speech! Based on the success of the event, there is little doubt that it will become an annual event!
