Otago Cambridge Society
The Otago Cambridge Society held a formal dinner on Thursday 10 September 2009 to mark the 800th Anniversary of Cambridge University. The venue was Selwyn College Dunedin, which is the sister college of Selwyn College Cambridge, both being founded in the latter half of the 19th century and both being named after George Augustus Selwyn, who was the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand before returning to England to become the Bishop of Lichfield.
The dinner was attended by 35 people, including some from as far afield as Christchurch in Canterbury and Wanaka in Central Otago. The guests of honour were Prof. David Skegg, Vice-Chancellor of Otago University (himself an Oxford man!) and Emeritus Professor Hugh Mellor, Cambridge philosopher and actor, who gave an after-dinner talk on Cambridge theatre. Prof. Alison Richard, Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University, sent a personal message, which was read our before the toast.
It was a most enjoyable evening in which old contacts were renewed and new ones made. As one participant wrote, 'it was a real treat to dine with such an interesting and diverse group'.
