Cambridge Society of Oxfordshire

Cambridge Society of Oxfordshire

  • Birds eye view of Oxford

The Cambridge Society of Oxfordshire provides a great opportunity to make new friends and contacts with other Cambridge alumni in and around Oxfordshire.  We run a wide-ranging programme of events, drawing on the riches of the Oxford area in terms both of the many distinguished and interesting people who can readily be persuaded to come and speak to the Society, and also the many and varied venues for visits and activities.  For a list of current and past events, please see the “Group Events” tab above the photo.

Since our recent relaunch we are establishing a regular programme of events to include museum and walking tours, led wonderfully by a team of excellent Blue and Green Badge Tourist guides, as well as some informal pub nights, together with a variety of networking opportunities, lunches, drinks parties, talks, visits to interesting places and musical events.  Our annual day out to the Henley Literary Festival is always popular, as are tours of various scientific establishments.  We also have reciprocal arrangements with other local groups.

Events and outings take place both at weekends and on weekdays, and partners and guests are always welcome.

If you would like to join the society please click “Join Group” - directly above the photo at the top of the page - for more information.  For all other enquiries, please email our Secretary using the "Email Group contacts” button below.

OUR COMMITTEE

The University has over 460 alumni societies around the world, all not-for-profit and all run by unremunerated volunteers.  Oxfordshire has a huge amount to offer but we cannot stay distinctive if we just offer events that the general public can easily do also.  It’s that special venue, special event, special person, or special theme, that brings Cambridge people together to meet others and to enjoy special times.  Our Committee welcomes ideas and suggestions, and members are also encouraged to offer themselves for election to the Committee itself.  We usually meet by Zoom about four times per year, with email correspondence in between.  It is expected that each member will assume overall management of at least one event per year, supported by the Secretary and all other committee members.

We look forward to welcoming you to the society and hope we meet at an event soon.

Anyone who has been registered as a member of the University of Cambridge in an undergraduate, graduate or other academic capacity is welcome to join the society.  You will have access to many great social events every year, many of which are exclusive to our members and their guests and our ultimate goal is for you to make new friends and contacts with other Cambridge alumni in and around Oxfordshire.  Upon becoming a member you will receive our email newsletter.  You may also receive further updates of Society news, further events of relevance to members, and other items of interest via our Facebook page.

With numbers rising to some 3,500 Cambridge graduates within Oxfordshire our small committee of volunteers faces a daunting task, so we have instituted a formal membership subscription system – the nominal sum of £12 p.a. paid via standing order or PayPal.  Each event is then charged to our members at a level to cover its costs, and we aim for a small surplus which goes into our reserves for a rainy day, for our admin, internet and booking services, and for the occasional loss.  We employ a Secretary who helps oversee the administration side of the society, but the rest of our Cambridge committee members are unremunerated – we do it for fun (of which there is a lot, though sometimes it does get a bit frantic).

HOW TO JOIN
If you are an alum of the University and would like to join the society and take advantage of our exclusive events please fill in our enrolment form here.  Our Secretary will then be in touch to help set up your membership subs.  Your status will be verified and then your details will be added to our subscription mailing list.
